The floating structure to clean oceans is taking shape: redesigned to be more efficient and to work in 2018

The floating structure to clean oceans is taking shape: redesigned to be more efficient and to work in 2018

Good news for all those who struggle to maintain and improve the environment, and indirectly for everyone: from Ocean Cleanup they give life signs with a redesign in their cleaning structure of seas and oceans. It promises greater efficiency and there is an updated planning on its deployment.

For those who are lost we have to comment that behind the project started in 2012 is a boy called Boyan Slat - then he was twenty-, his main intention is to clean the sea with giant structures and floating.

What Ocean Cleanup proposes is an artificial barrier with a well-studied depth, so that marine life can somehow avoid it. They would be placed in areas where there are currents to obtain a passive collection of the garbage.

A new design, in parts
With what it presented in 2015 already won the INDEX award for its design, now two years later we have the same updated idea, with the intention of planting it in the Pacific next year.

Parts of the structure are already in production, and it should be noted that all the money that costs the initiative comes out of donations and crowdfunding.

The new design is based on using many smaller structures, rather than a giant: initially it was a 100km, now they will be 50 with one kilometer in length each.

Thanks to the new design, creators say that the efficiency of the surface collection can be increased so that half of the waste in the Pacific could be cleaned in five years, at a cost of 320 million dollars. This depends on how many they place and what works as they see fit, but talking about such positive data is always nice.

If you are interested in the operation of the system-use of currents, prototypes, estimates - I recommend you take a look at the intervention that Boyan Slat and the company made a few hours ago on the occasion of his new phase, dubbed " The Next Phase":
