Edit Office files from the Chrome browser

Edit Office files from the Chrome browser
Office Edition is an extension for the Google Chrome browser that allows you to open and edit native Office files from your browser, be it Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. The advantage of this application is that it does not require having any of these Microsoft products installed.

Files that arrive via Gmail, or that open from the storage space offered by Google Drive, will be able to open directly in Chrome for reading or editing. In turn, it is possible to open any file (.doc, .xls, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx) saved in the browser menu or drag (to the navigation bar of any tab) the hard drive.

This extension includes the Office Compatibility Mode (OCM) feature. If you have a Gmail mail account, any compatible attachment will allow you to preview it, and clicking on Docs, Sheet or Layout (as appropriate), you will be taken to the OCM mode to proceed To make any kind of modification.

Google products already included their own office applications (Google Docs), but with the OCM feature you have the option to save the files in DOC, XLS, PPT, etc. formats. Each time a change is made, the changes are automatically saved. Native Google tools allow editing of the same document or spreadsheet by several users, so if you want to do the same with some Word or Excel file you must do the conversion, edit together, and then go back To save it in its original format (either on the hard drive or in the cloud through the Drive service).

This extension is compatible with Office 2007 and later files. It presents the same functions, but with some limitations, mainly in what it does to the size of the spreadsheets. In the case of PowerPoint presentations, they will also be able to open from the browser without needing extra software.

As already mentioned, one of the advantages of this alternative to Office is that it is completely free, unlike Microsoft tools; But remember that there are other free alternatives such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice that supports any of the formats mentioned. One possible disadvantage is that it requires to be connected to the internet to make any kind of change (yes it can be downloaded and read offline).

Office Edition is available for Chrome, for Windows and Mac operating systems. For Chromebooks and Android mobile devices, this application is already installed. To use with Google Drive requires the latest version installed.
