The megapixels matter, at least in Sony: in 2018 will arrive its sensors of 150 megapíxeles

The megapixels matter, at least in Sony: in 2018 will arrive its sensors of 150 megapíxeles

Most mortals will not need much more than 24 megapixels for things they want to do with cameras, but we must be aware that there are other needs and formats that need more resolution. Sony does not forget them and we are going to find impressive developments in the near future.

The Japanese company leads the market of sensors, uses them for own consumption, but mainly it sells to other manufacturers the modules necessary to mount a camera in conditions, be inside a telephone, or inside a professional camera. They do not disgust any market, setting the pace of technology.

The case today has to do with a roadmap shared by the people of Dpreview in which we see that 'Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation' continues to raise the resolution to impressive limits: 150 megapixels will be a reality at some point of the year comes.

Yes, for 2018 it has a series of sensors programmed for cameras of ' average digital format, or for those systems that need that resolution. The different sensors you are cooking have different lighting technologies:
  • IMX211 is a 100 megapixel sensor that is already inside the Phase One XF, because next year will have a monochrome version. In both cases the lighting will be frontal.
  • IMX461 will be another sensor of 100 megapixels, with a size of 44 x 33 millimeters, that is characterized to take the recognized backlight of the Japanese house to a format like this one.
  • The surprise-or monster-next season is called IMX411. It will deliver 150 megapixels in a sensor size of 40.4 x 53.7 mm, backlit. It will have monochrome version.

Too many megapixels
What are these cameras for? Currently they are used in professional sectors, since the usual is to spend figures close to 60,000 euros for a top of range with these characteristics.

The reality is that there are brands opening a new market, like Fuji, that start to offer sensors of this size and 50 megapixels for much less money.

A little above, both without mirror, we have the Hasselblad X1D. We would not be surprised if one of those sensors came to an upcoming Fuji GFX 100, or a new Hasselblad.

Practical applications I think go beyond fashion, ads and crop images incredibly in that sector, here is introduced a very powerful tool for aerial photography, surveillance and inspection.

As Sony evolves this sector, it also does it in the domestic at a pace that the rest finds it difficult to follow - cameras and mobiles - but neither does it forget business like the cameras of high sensitivity to create night security systems, or cameras Which record at high speed, in order to serve the creators of autonomous cars and industrial robots.

101 megapixels in a Phase One XF
Sony does not stretch megapixels by stretching, it does so within a sensor much larger than usual in commercial cameras, where it had already surpassed the three digits next to companies like Phase One.

Sony's collaboration with this company has led to the market launch of a camera with a 101-megapixel CMOS sensor that records 16-bit color. To give us a quick idea, the sensor size is 2.5 times larger than a full frame camera such as a Canon Eos Mark IV or a Sony A7.
