Disney has known how to conquer us since the cartoons were in black and white, taking advantage of the technological advances not only in animation. It is not surprising that with the rise of robotics and artificial intelligence especially in the last year now the big company work on applying them to materialize their characters in their theme parks .
The company gave a talk at the SXSW titled "Using AI & Machine Learning to Extend the Disney Magic" in which Jon Snoddy (senior vice president of research and development) and other related employees participated. Thus, the AI can be useful for the characters of the parks , in which they are also considering other technological tools to improve the experience.
From animation to reality going by the "creepy"
According to Snoddy explained, AI and machine learning are going to be key for them in order for the characters to move between the visiting public of the parks. He exemplified it with a video of the robot of Pascal, a chameleon that appears in 'Enredados', being the first personage with whom it is being controlled by AI.
The goal is to get the most out of character and story in the parks, and not make the claim is to see robots with AI, as Snoddy pointed out.
As they describe in BBC , the sample that reproduced during the act showed to a robotic Pascal that was a "terrific recreation" of the personage. But this is by no means the end result, since the company is just looking to avoid the haunting valley (that is, to end up giving fear instead of joy).
Mike White (CTO and senior vice president of Disney Interactive and Disney Consumer Products) commented that its use would allow visitors to be more involved in the stories that are told. It was not given much detail on how this will apply in terms of timelines and methods but if you dropped that Pascal was not the only one and you are working with more characters like Mickey Mouse.
What they conveyed is that more collaboration will be needed between the technical team and the storytelling team , given that the intention is that in addition to being an aid in the creation of characters in the parks can better convey the stories. In this sense, what they are also working on is the use of apps in the theme parks as small questionnaires or chats, focused especially on a younger audience.
