MWC 2017 - Getting Started with Nokia 3, 5 and 6

MWC 2017 - Getting Started with Nokia 3, 5 and 6

At the Mobile World Congress,  the Finnish company HMD, which bought the rights of the Nokia maker,  presented  three mobiles under Android, stamped Nokia seal. With prices ranging from € 139 to € 229, the Nokia family of smartphones wants to try to carve a small place on an aggressive tariff segment, and it seems to have the arguments to do so.

Launched in great pomp by HMD, the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 are supposed to embody the revival of Nokia. After the Lumia series, which never really succeeded in finding its audience, the Finnish brand, or rather what remains after resale by Microsoft, turns to Android to try to find its salvation. And we can say that the brand can make its entrance.

All three mobile phones come with a relatively good technical data sheet for their price. The Nokia 6, more "high-end" of the three offers for 229 € a full HD screen of 5.5 inches, a chip Snapdragon 430, 4 GB of RAM, a battery of 3 000 mAh and a camera of 16 Mpx. The Nokia 5 keeps the same mobile chip and the same battery, but passes on an HD screen, is equipped with "only" 2 GB of RAM and a main photo sensor of 13 Mpx, all for 189 €. Finally, the Nokia 3 is equipped with a Mediatek MT6737 chip, 2 GB of RAM, a battery of 2650 mAh, and a main photo sensor of 8 Mpx. All run under the latest version of Android, the 7.1.1. Nokia mobiles do not have too much to blush against the competition. For more details on technical specifications, please visit the article dedicated to their ads.

Impeccable constructions
Beyond the technical characteristics, where the new Nokia mobiles impress, it is on their manufacturing quality. Whether the Nokia 6, 5 or 3, all are impeccably well finished in their style and for their price. Whether the metal shell of the Nokia 6, the aluminum of the Nokia 5 or the polycarbonate of 3, each gives a pleasant feeling of solidity and seriousness. HMD mobiles therefore move a bit the lines regarding the construction expectations for smartphones at this price.

Question software, the three mobiles come natively equipped with Android 7.1.1, the latest version of Android as of date. The interface adopted is that found on Google Pixels , and for good reason: the new Nokia mobiles are compatible with Google Assistant, making Nokia the third brand to integrate the personal assistant service, behind Google itself And LG with its G6 . Of course with us, the service being absent, the approach loses a bit of its interest. But sticking to a "stock" version of Android allows HMD to follow as closely as possible the calendar of updates from Google. On the other hand, if the company is committed to deploying the monthly security patches, no roadmap for tracking major versions of Android has been announced.

Android stock and Google Assistant
Unfortunately, for all its qualities, the new Nokia all seem to have a notable defect: the calibration of their screen. The palm returns to the 6 which displays supersaturated colors, but the 3, like the 5, is also afflicted to a lesser extent of the "fluophone" syndrome. Fading colors will seduce some, but it is a shame not to have an option to choose a more neutral profile.

Finally, on the photo side, the Nokia 6 seems to be doing pretty well, although the Nokia conference room is probably not the most obvious frame to judge. The mobile manages to capture quite detailed pictures, but the focus and trigger speed could be improved. The Nokia 5 makes some sacrifices of detail, but manages to maintain a generally fairly readable scene; As for the Nokia 3, 8-megapixel sensor, it is a bit difficult to distinguish certain elements of the scene, a flat that adds to a sharp lack of speed in focus and triggering, again.

In the end, the serious arrival of Nokia in the Android world is rather successful despite some worries here and there and these new mobiles give a seductive foretaste of what the manufacturer could do if he threw himself to the assault of the top Of the range.
