Dot is the first smartwatch for the blind: representing Braille in the clock face

Dot is the first smartwatch for the blind: representing Braille in the clock face

Louis Braille devised his system of points in relief almost two hundred years ago, still today in perfect use this system allows blind people to read and write effectively, even dedicate themselves to more complicated tasks in the input and output of data as can be computing.¿Why not a smartwatch ?

This idea was brought to us by the Dot company a couple of years ago, we showed you how the clock recreations were, with the dynamic reliefs on the surface. Time has passed and the product has matured until we find something more attractive: now it is circular, and even has a price.

Dot points are raised independently to form information in braille, and from there we can receive things as different as notifications, messages, weather information, and of course, the time.

Obviously only the user can read it, and not the rest of the people around, as it would with a voice-based assistant.

Being more concrete we can say that the "screen" is able to represent four Braille characters at any given time - each one counts with six points - according to its creators is the first one that can do this. The company defends here that with four characters is enough.

In the process of trial and development they have realized that a balance had to be struck between the strength of the braille points and the ease of recognition. We also have other forms of interaction, like three buttons on the right side that allow additional functionalities, such as programmed answers, or configurations.

From March this year the company will begin to send the product to the 140,000 who decided to support the idea in its financing platform. Next year, if everything goes as it should, it will be a market reality for the rest.

For those who did not enter the game of the initial booking, there will be a circulation of 1,000 units in London stores, priced at $ 320.
