Are you looking for an original remote to control a drone? It's time to dust off your Game Boy

Within the maker community there are plenty of projects based on ingenuity and curiosity of its creators, projects that are important to take objects and create tools in order to meet very interesting developments that are available to anyone with the time and money enough.

For several years the legendary Game Boy has been part of a lot of maker projects, this because it has become a challenge to find new uses and functions with other products where apparently there is no connection, as today we will see a project that converts Game Boy on a remote control to control a drone.

Game Boy + Arduino

Gautier Hattenberger is one of the most important figures in the world of development tools for drones, who this time developed an idea he had in his head for some years, which is to use the
controls of a Game Boy to control a Drone.

To do this it is supporting an Arduino board connected to the Game Boy by a modification to the Game Link cable, which at one end has a USB connector, this in turn is linked to a FTDI semiconductor connected to a laptop Which contains drone management software.

With this we can use the crosshead and the buttons on the Game Boy to move in this case a drone Parrot ARDrone2, the tricky part is that we need to be connected to a laptop at all times, as this is where the WiFi module that allows is the Link to the drone.

Of course this is not practical and there is no intention of it becoming a recurring for users of drone use it method, since for Hattenberger it is a mere hobby where he sought to prove to himself that the old handheld console Could serve beyond video games.

The next challenge for Hattenberger is to install a WiFi module in the Game Boy and modify the software in order to control the drone without laptop, but because there is very little documentation for the console everything has to be created from scratch. If anyone is interested and have enough to start this project with time, all code and instructions are available on GitHub.
