As you know, the arrival of hard disk capacities greater than 2 Tio / 2.2 TB poses some compatibility issues, especially on Windows. It must indeed pass an LBA type addressing to Long LBA and MBR partitioning must be abandoned in favor of GPT.

To use such a drive as a secondary drive, Vista and Windows 7 compatible, as Windows XP 64-bit. Windows XP 32-bit does not handle these disks. To use such primary disk drive, you need to combine a Vista or Windows 7 64 bit and a UEFI bios. What about the practice? We got our hands on a Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB (WD30EZRS).

This configuration is not intended to be supported ... that we confirm. Windows XP SP3 32-bit not even recognize that a disc of 746.51 GB in our case, which may be related to a problem with the BIOS! Note that Paragon  announced a solution to circumvent the limitation of XP, but it will pay off eventually.

This time, Windows recognizes as well the hard disk with a capacity of 3 TB, and more exactly 2749.39 Gio (GB Windows displays when it calculates Gio). By using MBR partitions, one can create a first partition of 2048 Gio, but the remaining space is not usable. If we convert the disk to GPT, which requires erasing existing partitions beforehand, you can use the 2794 Gio.

To install and boot on a disk using the GPT requires a UEFI bios and a Windows Vista / 7 64-bit. With 32-bit installation DVD or without UEFI BIOS, partitioning to MBR and will only be used in 2048 Gio. If the disk is already partitioned into GPT, Windows will refuse to install it.
